Ishtar, known as Inanna in Sumerian mythology, was the goddess of love, beauty, sexuality, fertility, warfare, and political power. Worshipped throughout ancient Mesopotamia, she was among the most important deities of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian, and Assyrian civilizations.
Unlike goddesses associated exclusively with love or motherhood, Ishtar embodied a remarkable combination of sensual beauty, fierce independence, military strength, and divine authority. Her complex nature represented both the creative and destructive forces of existence.
In Mesopotamian mythology, Ishtar was closely associated with the planet Venus, appearing as both the morning and evening star. This celestial connection symbolized her extraordinary power and influence over the heavens and earthly affairs.
One of her most famous mythological stories is the Descent of Inanna into the Underworld, in which the goddess journeys into the realm of the dead, confronting the mysteries of mortality, power, and transformation.
Ishtar was also associated with lions, powerful symbols of courage, royalty, and divine strength. Her connection to these majestic animals reflected her authority as a warrior goddess and protector of kings.
This sculpture features a beautiful nude female figure with elaborate headwear, raised arms, detailed wings, and birdlike feet, standing above two reclining lions and accompanied by two stylized owls.
The composition is inspired by the famous Burney Relief, also known as the Queen of the Night Relief, an ancient Mesopotamian artwork depicting a winged female figure surrounded by powerful animal symbolism. Although the identity of the figure in the original relief remains debated among historians, Ishtar is one of the deities proposed in interpretations of the artwork.
The combination of the goddess's commanding posture, elegant anatomy, feathered wings, and surrounding animals creates a captivating representation of feminine power, mystery, and ancient mythology.
Finished entirely in a beautiful metallic gold color, the sculpture captures the appearance of a precious ancient artifact. Its reflective golden surface highlights the details of the wings, headdress, facial features, and animal figures, creating a striking decorative centerpiece.
Each sculpture is individually produced and finished, with careful attention given to its details and overall appearance.
